Nearly 10 octaves.
how many hz can i hear
The short answer is: from about 20 Hz to about 20 kHz in young people with good hearing, but each person has their own limit. This test measures the high end, from 8 to 20 kHz, in each ear; the low end can be tried with the tone generator.
Nearly 10 octaves.
Double the frequency.
Where many of us stop.
Which is why bass needs big speakers.
A period of 50 microseconds.
It plays pure tones at 1 kHz (check) and then 8 to 20 kHz in one ear at a time. Each trial has two intervals of about one second, with three short tone pulses in only one of them, chosen at random. You answer in which one you heard the tone. Two correct answers unlock the next frequency; a wrong answer or an "I heard nothing" ends that ear, and the last frequency you got right becomes the result.
Because it describes young people with good hearing and depends on volume: an 18 kHz tone may be inaudible at one level and clear at another, and every ear has its own threshold. Age, noise, illness and medication shift the limit, and so does the equipment.
Speech mainly uses the region from a few hundred Hz to a few kHz, far from the 17 or 20 kHz of the test. That is why losing the extreme highs does not usually disturb conversation, and routine clinical audiometry examines 250 Hz to 8 kHz.
Training improves attention and the ability to recognize faint tones, but it does not bring back auditory cells that were lost. Do not raise the volume trying to hear more, since that can make hearing worse.
