how to measure the height of a tree
Knowing the height of a tree matters for safe pruning, for judging the risk of it falling on a house, for estimating timber volume, or simply out of curiosity. The method is the same one surveyors use with a clinometer, and a phone has everything it needs.

At forty metres, the same degree of error already costs more than a metre.
It depends far more on distance than on the sensor. With a steady sight, aiming error is around one degree, which translates into a few centimetres for nearby objects and more than a metre for a building tens of metres away. The tool computes and displays that margin for every measurement, instead of showing two decimal places and pretending they are trustworthy.
You do, for the two-sighting method to work. If tall grass or a wall hides the base, use the eye-height method, which infers the distance from the angle down to the ground at the foot of the tree, or reposition until the base is visible.
As a first estimate, comparing the measured height with the distance to the building. But fall risk depends on far more than height: trunk health, root system, lean and prevailing winds. For a tree that worries you, consult an arborist or your municipal tree service.
