The NATO phonetic alphabet, technically the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) spelling alphabet, assigns a fixed code word to each of the 26 letters (Alfa, Bravo, Charlie...) and each of the 10 digits (Zero through Nine), so any sequence can be spelled out over radio without the risk of confusing letters that sound alike, like B, D, P, T and V. The current version took effect in 1956, after years of intelligibility testing conducted by ICAO across dozens of languages and under real radio-noise conditions, which is why the spellings "Alfa" (without "ph") and "Juliett" (with a double "T") are deliberate, not typos: they keep speakers of other languages from pronouncing those words differently than intended. Despite its popular "NATO alphabet" name, it is also the official standard for civil aviation (ICAO) and maritime radiotelephony (ITU), used by air traffic controllers, police forces and call centers worldwide whenever a letter or number needs to travel by voice without ambiguity.

Those are deliberate, official ICAO spellings. "Alfa" uses an "f" instead of "ph" so speakers of languages without that convention still pronounce it correctly, and "Juliett" gets a second "t" because, in French, a single trailing "t" tends to go silent. They aren't typos, reverting them to "Alpha"/"Juliet" would defeat the alphabet's whole purpose.
