NCM Tariff Classification
Every good that crosses Brazil's border carries an 8-digit NCM code, and it is that code, not the product's name, that decides its tax and customs treatment. This page explains where those 8 digits come from and why the same product can shift codes depending on how it is processed or presented, before you look one up in the tool.
A text search returns every level of the hierarchy that matches the word, from the 2-digit chapter down to the full 8-digit item/sub-item.
With exactly 8 digits, the lookup goes straight to the code, skipping the text search.
A direct code lookup only accepts exactly 8 numeric digits; anything else falls back to a text search.
The safest path is to start from the actual characteristics of the item, such as composition, purpose, predominant material, presentation and real use. A commercial name can help, but it is rarely enough by itself for reliable tax classification.
The first 2 digits are the chapter, the first 4 the heading, the first 6 the subheading, all coming from the international Harmonized System; the last 2 digits are the item and sub-item, which only exist in the Mercosul version of the code.
Only the first 6 digits, because the Harmonized System is shared by more than 200 countries that signed the World Customs Organization's convention; the last 2 digits are exclusive to Mercosul and don't exist outside Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

The table in force since April 1, 2022 was set by Resolução Camex No. 272/2021, issued by Brazil's Foreign Trade Chamber; later updates to specific chapters are also issued as Camex resolutions.
