The 1 does not mean Type 1. Only the NPPES registry gives the type.
NPI type 1 vs type 2, does the first digit mean anything
It is tempting to read 1 as individual and 2 as organization. That is not how the NPI works. This page explains what the CMS wrote about the first digit, where the terms Type 1 and Type 2 come from and how validation handles an unexpected first digit.
The 1 does not mean Type 1. Only the NPPES registry gives the type.
The 2 does not mean Type 2 either.
The CMS describes initial issuance with 1 or 2. The tool treats any other first digit as outside the standard.
Example number from the document. It does not by itself identify any provider.
It is the unique 10-digit identifier of US health care providers, created by the final rule of January 23, 2004 (69 FR 3434). CMS issues and maintains it through the NPPES registry. The number has no embedded meaning: it does not indicate state, specialty or provider type.
No. The number carries no such information. Query the NPPES NPI Registry, which shows the type, name and public details of the provider.
The CMS document says that using other first digits must be coordinated with the health plan identifier once it is adopted. For now the tool follows the 1 or 2 rule and warns when Luhn closes with another digit.
Yes, they are different providers in the registry, each with its own NPI. The number itself never shows which is which.

The NPI does not reveal whether it is Type 1 (individual) or Type 2 (organization). That only shows up in the official NPPES registry.

| Value | 8 | 0 | 8 | 8 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 6 | 4 | 1 | 6 | 5 | 8 | 9 | 3 |
8 + 0 + 8 + 8 + 0 + 2 + 2 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 6 + 5 + 8 + 9 + 3 = 70 | mod 10 = 0
The first 5 digits (80840) are the constant prefix. Digits in alternating positions are doubled starting next to the last one, and doubles above 9 lose 9. The total must be a multiple of 10.
Everything runs in your browser. No NPI you type or generate is sent to a server, and analytics only receives the action and the overall result, never the number.
