Flesch reading ease score
The Flesch score rates a text from 0 to 100 by combining two simple measures: how many words, on average, fit in each sentence, and how many syllables, on average, fit in each word. The higher the score, the easier the text is to read, and each ten-point band below 100 maps to a different difficulty level.
Average of 5.33 words per sentence and 1.94 syllables per word, using the 248.835 constant from the Portuguese adaptation.
Same word and sentence count, but fewer syllables per word (1.13 on average), which pushes the English score to the 100 ceiling.
The tool splits the 0-to-100 scale into five fixed twenty-point bands, from easiest (80+) to hardest (below 20).
We divide the word count by the chosen reading speed (200 words per minute by default). You can adjust that speed with the slider. Speaking time uses a lower speed (about 130 wpm), typical of narration and presentations.
The Flesch Reading Ease score returns a 0-to-100 rating where higher means easier. Flesch-Kincaid uses the same two inputs, words per sentence and syllables per word, but with different weights to estimate a school grade level directly, so the two formulas read the same data in opposite directions.
Because the 206.835 constant was calibrated to English syllable statistics. Portuguese, with typically longer words in syllable count, needs the 248.835 constant from the Martins et al. adaptation so the same 0-to-100 scale still means the same thing in both languages.
Not necessarily by design, but it is expected: long sentences and terms with many syllables push the score into the "hard" or "very hard" bands even when the text is accurate and well written. The score measures mechanical reading ease, not content quality or accuracy.
The tool counts runs of consecutive vowels in each word as one syllable, a fast estimation method that does not follow every formal hyphenation rule in Portuguese or English, but comes close enough for the averages the two formulas use.
