Gameplay clips have two traits that weigh on the math: lots of motion, which burns bits, and 60 frames per second. The tool only keeps 60 fps when the bitrate has 25% of headroom; otherwise it uses 30 fps, which doubles the bits available per frame. A 45-second clip in 20 MB gets about 3.3 Mbps of video, which sustains 720p at 30 fps at 0.12 bits per pixel, comfortably. A 2-minute one drops to 540p at 1.19 Mbps. At 10 minutes the 20 MB limit leaves only 205 kbps of video and the picture goes to 240p, the point where it is worth trimming a section instead of compressing everything.
Discord also measures the file in a specific way on mobile: since August 2026 the size is checked before the app's automatic compression, the same as on desktop. That means the file has to fit the 20 MB as you send it, not after the app shrinks it. Compressing first, here, avoids the rejection and lets you pick the resolution. For portrait videos the rule uses the short side: a 1-minute vertical clip in 20 MB comes out at 720x1280.
