Single Deck vs. Multi-Deck Blackjack

Blackjack basic strategy is not a single, universal chart, it depends on how many decks are in play. Single-deck tables, common at smaller casinos and some high-limit tables, have a handful of decision cells that differ from the standard 6-to-8-deck tables.

Why the deck count matters

Basic strategy is derived from the probability of the next card drawn. In a 6-8 deck shoe, drawing a card mid-hand shifts that probability almost imperceptibly. In a single deck, the same draw represents a much larger slice of the total, the shoe's "depletion" during the hand itself is stronger, and that shifts the expected value of a handful of decisions enough to flip the optimal action.
This tool does not use a fixed chart per deck count: the engine recomputes the probability of every dealer outcome and the expected value of every player action directly from the configured shoe, so the sensitivity to deck count is a genuine consequence of the calculation, not a hand-typed extra table.
Broadly speaking, a single deck tends to favor the player slightly more, the house edge estimated by this tool for a single deck with generous rules (S17, DAS) often comes out close to zero, or even slightly negative, versus roughly 0.4% to 0.6% for a 6-deck shoe with the same rules.

What do S17 and H17 mean?

S17 ("stand on 17") means the dealer always stands on 17, even a "soft" 17 (with an Ace counting as 11, like Ace+6). H17 ("hit on 17") means the dealer hits that soft 17 instead. H17 is slightly worse for the player, it raises the house edge, because the dealer has more chances to improve the hand instead of stopping.
