how to level a picture frame
A crooked picture frame is the kind of mistake that only becomes visible after the nail is already in the wall. Your phone accelerometer lets you check level before drilling, and again afterwards with the frame hanging, without a physical spirit level.

Once calibrated, a phone accelerometer resolves roughly 0.1 to 0.2 degrees, which is about 2 to 3.5 millimetres per metre. That is enough to set a countertop, hang a shelf, check a washing machine or level a picture frame. It is not enough for precision work such as industrial machine alignment or surveying, where a certified electronic level with arc-second resolution is used.
Yes, and it is the recommended approach, as long as the frame has a straight edge for firm contact. On ornate or rounded mouldings, lay a ruler or a straight piece of wood across the frame and rest the phone on that, so you measure the piece rather than the ornament.
Then there is a judgement call. A frame levelled by gravity on a visibly skewed wall can look wrong, because the eye compares it with the lines of the room, such as skirting and door frames. Measure the skirting with the tool: if it is far off, aligning the frame with it sometimes fools the eye better than aligning with true horizontal.
