10 min of 720p at 5 Mbps
- Input
- 600 s, 5 Mbps
- Expected output
- 375 MB
5,000,000 × 600 ÷ 8 = 375,000,000 bytes. Stereo audio at 384 kbps adds another 28.8 MB.
what bitrate to use for YouTube and live streams
YouTube publishes recommended bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate. They are recommendations, not rules, and work as a starting point. The calculator below turns any value in the table into file size and shows what fits a limit.
5,000,000 × 600 ÷ 8 = 375,000,000 bytes. Stereo audio at 384 kbps adds another 28.8 MB.
3.6 GB per hour of video; with 384 kbps audio, about 3.77 GB.
Doubling the bitrate doubles the file: 7.2 GB per hour.
6.3 GB per hour of video sent; 128 kbps audio adds about 58 MB.
At 100 Mbps, 80 seconds if the connection delivers its full speed; at 50 Mbps, 160 seconds; at 1 Gbps, 8 seconds. At 90% efficiency and 100 Mbps it would be about 89 seconds. In practice the origin server and Wi-Fi are usually the limit.
You can: YouTube accepts it and reprocesses the video. A lower bitrate shrinks the file but can cause blocking and loss of detail, mainly in high-motion scenes. In the calculator's Target bitrate tab you see how much of the recommendation your value reaches.
Because there are twice as many frames per second to encode. At 1080p the recommendation goes from 8 to 12 Mbps when moving from 30 to 60 fps, a 50% rise rather than 100%.
Yes. They are YouTube recommendations, checked on the official page on 2026-10-06, and the platform can update them. Check the official page before an important production; the links are in the tool's Reference tab.
1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, as on drives and most download pages. Mbps is always decimal.
ISPs sell speed in bits per second (Mbps). Files and browsers measure in bytes (MB). Since 1 byte is 8 bits, a download moves at one eighth of the advertised number: 100 Mbps delivers at most 12.5 MB/s.
Your speed: 100 Mbps equals 12.5 MB/s.
size in bits ÷ effective speed: 400,000,000,000 bit ÷ 100,000,000 bit/s = 4,000 s

Sizes are round examples, not measurements: games, movies and ISO images vary a lot.
