How Unicode turns a picture into copyable text

The Unicode standard reserves specific code ranges for emoji, but the underlying logic is the same used for any letter: every symbol is a number (a codepoint) represented as UTF-8 or UTF-16 depending on the system. That's why an emoji can be copied, pasted, searched for, and even used in a file name or variable name, exactly like an accented letter.

Compound emoji, a family, a country flag, a profession with a skin tone, aren't a single codepoint; they're a sequence of several codepoints joined by an invisible character called a Zero Width Joiner (ZWJ, U+200D). The app displaying the result needs to recognize the whole sequence to render a single combined emoji; if it doesn't, it shows the separate components side by side instead (e.g. a person, a symbol, and a flag, one after another).

That's why this tool always copies the full, correct codepoint sequence, never an image, so the result behaves like real text in any app that accepts Unicode.

Why the same emoji looks different on your phone and someone else's

Unicode standardizes only the meaning and codepoint of each emoji, not the artwork. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, WhatsApp, Discord and X (Twitter) each maintain their own set of illustrations (an emoji font) to represent the same codepoints, and each updates that set on its own schedule.

That's why a newly added emoji can render perfectly on an up-to-date iPhone and show up as an empty box (□) on an older Android device or in an app that hasn't updated its emoji font yet: the codepoint exists and was copied correctly, but the receiving device doesn't have the artwork for it yet.

Emoji that have been around for a decade or two (classic faces, hearts, basic symbols) have close to universal compatibility. Recent additions, like the ones flagged "new" here, can take months or years to reach every platform.

How skin tone modifiers work (the Fitzpatrick scale)

Since Unicode 8.0 (2015), emoji that depict hands, people or body parts can take a skin tone modifier: an extra codepoint, based on the dermatological Fitzpatrick scale (light, medium-light, medium, medium-dark and dark), combined with the base emoji into a single sequence.

Not every emoji supports a modifier, symbols, objects, animals, food and most non-human emoji stay at the "default" tone (the classic yellow), because they don't represent a person. When a skin-tone emoji is combined with another one (like a handshake between two people), Unicode also defines combinations with two different tones, this tool applies the same chosen tone to both sides to keep the experience simple.

Emoji get read out loud too, and that matters for screen reader users

Screen readers (VoiceOver, TalkBack, NVDA) don't "see" the emoji artwork: they announce the official Unicode name for that character, like "face with tears of joy" or "waving hand: medium-dark skin tone." A long run of emoji with no surrounding text can turn into a tiring list of technical names instead of a clear message.

Best practice is to use emoji as an occasional complement to clear text, not a replacement for it, especially in important content (alerts, instructions, essential information).
