receipt vs invoice difference
These are two documents with different jobs. The receipt comes from civil law and proves the release between two parties. The invoice comes from tax law and records the operation for the tax authorities. One does not replace the other, and the receipt generator says so on screen and on the document.
Example from the Entrepreneur Portal itself: selling parts and computers calls for an NF-e.
Also from the Entrepreneur Portal: maintenance, repairs and adjustments call for an NFS-e.
In a settlement between the parties, the receipt shows the installment paid, what was already paid and the balance. With R$ 6,000.00 total and R$ 1,000.00 paid before, the balance is R$ 4,500.00.
Under art. 320 of the Brazilian Civil Code, the release states the amount and kind of the debt, the name of the debtor or of whoever paid, the time and place of payment, and carries the creditor's signature or their representative's. The sole paragraph says the release is still valid without those elements if its terms or the circumstances show the debt was paid. In practice, fill in all of them: the more complete, the fewer disputes.
Yes, as proof of release between the parties, provided it carries what art. 320 of the Civil Code lists and is signed. The sole paragraph accepts a release even without some elements when the terms or circumstances show the payment.
Where an invoice is mandatory, no. A receipt is not a tax document and does not meet that duty. Confirm with an accountant what applies to your case.
According to the Entrepreneur Portal, the NF-e records the sale of products and falls under the state Treasury Department; the NFS-e records the provision of services and falls under the city Finance Department.
Optional. You can also print and sign by hand, which is the safest option.
Basis for the Brazilian templates: Civil Code, art. 320. The release must state the amount and kind of debt, the debtor (or who paid for them), the time and place of payment, and carry the creditor's signature (or their representative's).

A receipt does not replace an invoice where one is required, gives no tax advice and, without a signature, carries little weight as proof. For large amounts or delicate situations, talk to a lawyer or an accountant.
