YouTube thumbnail and banner image size
On YouTube the ratio matters more than the exact size: thumbnails are 16:9, the Shorts thumbnail is 9:16 and the banner shows only a central strip on every device. Use the guide to copy the sizes and the adjuster to cut your artwork into all three formats.
(2560 minus 1235) divided by 2 gives 662.5; (1440 minus 338) divided by 2 gives 551. The area covers 417,430 of 3,686,400 pixels, or 11.3%.
For 16:9 the usable height is 4000 x 9 / 16 = 2250 of the 3000 pixels, losing 750 pixels of height (25%).
3840 / 1280 = 3 on each axis, so 3 x 3 = 9 times the pixels. The file tends to weigh in the same order.
Instagram Help accepts photos 320 to 1080 pixels wide with a ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5, and recommends uploading at least 1080 wide. The 4:5 portrait (1080x1350) takes the most screen and is the tallest allowed. Since 2025 the profile grid shows 3:4 thumbnails, so the sides of a 4:5 may be cropped on the grid.
Any 16:9 image at least 640 pixels wide, as JPG or PNG. 1280x720 is the classic light size; Help also cites 3840x2160. Mind the 2 MB limit when uploading from a phone.
Because the banner is displayed differently on TV, computer and phone. Only the central 1235x338 pixel area shows on every device; put all text and logos there.
Help asks for a square or round image and displays it as a circle. 800x800 is the common guide recommendation, not a number YouTube publishes, so it shows as community in the tool.
