Instagram accepts a range of ratios, not a single size. The table and adjuster below show each format with its official or community badge and the check date, and let you crop a photo to several formats at once.
The photo is 4:3 and the target is 4:5, so in Cover mode 2400 of the 4000 pixels of width are kept. The focal point chooses which.
The thumbnail shows 75% of the width (1080 x 0.75), cutting 135 pixels from each side, assuming a center crop.
1920 minus 250 minus 340 gives 1330 pixels, the region where text and logos do not collide with the interface.
Instagram Help accepts photos 320 to 1080 pixels wide with a ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5, and recommends uploading at least 1080 wide. The 4:5 portrait (1080x1350) takes the most screen and is the tallest allowed. Since 2025 the profile grid shows 3:4 thumbnails, so the sides of a 4:5 may be cropped on the grid.

Both use 9:16, normally 1080x1920. The difference is the safe zone: in Reels the bottom has a larger band covered by the interface (about 35%) than in Stories (about 20%).
Help accepts 320 to 1080 wide and recommends at least 1080 to keep quality. Above 1080 Instagram shrinks the file, so 1080 wide avoids both loss and useless weight.

Since January 2025 the profile grid shows 3:4 thumbnails instead of squares (announced by Adam Mosseri, reported by the press). Help publishes no size for it: 1080x1440 is just 3:4 at 1080 wide.
