27 points, spent on scores from 8 to 15. The costs are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 for the values 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. For example, a 14 costs 7 of the 27 points.
Spend the 27 point buy points, use the standard array or roll 4d6 drop lowest. See modifiers, points left and the odds of each result.
The SRD 5.2.1 describes three ways to generate a character's six ability scores. In point buy you have 27 points to spend, and each value from 8 to 15 has a cost: 8 costs 0, 9 costs 1, 10 costs 2, 11 costs 3, 12 costs 4, 13 costs 5, 14 costs 7 and 15 costs 9. The cost climbs faster after 13, which is why 14 and 15 are pricier than the values in between. No ability goes above 15 before bonuses, and the highest total possible with 27 points is 75 (13, 13, 13, 12, 12, 12). In the standard array you use 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8, which add up to 72 and give modifiers that sum to +5; it costs exactly 27 points in point buy. The SRD also provides a table with the array already assigned for each of the 12 classes. In rolling, you throw 4d6, drop the lowest die and add the other three, six times. The result runs from 3 to 18, averaging 12.24 per ability (73.47 per set), with 13 the most likely value at 13.27%. The chance of a set totaling 72 or more is 61.71%, of having at least one 18 is 9.34%, and of having some value below 8 is 29.73%. The modifier is the score minus 10, divided by 2 and rounded down: 8 and 9 give -1, 10 and 11 give +0, 12 and 13 give +1, and so on up to +5 at 20. After generation, in the 2024 edition, the background raises one ability by 2 and another by 1, or three abilities by 1, always capped at 20. In the 2014 edition the bonuses come from race, and the cost table and the standard array are the same. This tool applies the bonuses you enter, warns when the cap of 20 cuts a value and, in the 2024 edition, warns when the +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1 pattern is not respected. The rolls use crypto.getRandomValues in your browser, with rejection sampling to avoid bias.
