edit an existing minecraft skin
There are two ways to start from a skin that already exists: drop the file into the import area or type a Java player username. Below, what happens with each format and how mirroring and layers help you change only what you want.
The face is copied mirrored to the left leg: column 0 becomes column 3.
The base left arm is at x 32-47, y 48-63.
Inside the same face, the columns invert.
Right arm front to left arm front.
The face is 3 pixels wide, so the symmetric point moves to column 38.
Pick the model (Steve or Alex), choose a color and paint on the 3D model or the 2D map. Start with the big areas using the bucket, then do the face, clothes and details with the pencil and use mirror so both sides match. Paint hair and accessories on the outer layer. When you are done, download the PNG and upload it in the launcher.
You can open the public skin of any Java account with a custom skin to use as a reference or change it, but respect other people work: the edit stays in your browser and the original player skin does not change.
The editor does not open them. It only accepts 64x64 and 64x32, and tells you the size of the refused file. The downloaded PNG always comes out at 64x64.
It replaces the open skin, but counts as one step: Ctrl+Z brings back what was there before, as long as you have not reloaded the page.
One finger paints on the model. Two fingers rotate and zoom. With a mouse, click and drag to paint; right button or Shift rotates.
The base layer is always opaque in the game, so the eraser restores the template gray.
