Almost a low E.
speaker cleaner sound 165 hz
The 165 Hz tone is a low, continuous sound, almost a low guitar E. Press Play with the volume low, raise it slowly and keep the phone speaker-down. It is not a repair: see below what is actually known.
Almost a low E.
One cycle.
In air at 20 degrees.
Logarithmic sweep, 2.5 s after the start.
Each cycle lasts 5 s.
There is no proof that it does. In our searches no independent test appears measuring how much water leaves with a tone, and the 165 Hz figure looks like an app convention. The mechanism is plausible: the cone vibrates and can push droplets out of the grille, and muffled sound often improves once the water leaves. But that does not dry the inside of the device or repair corrosion.
Phone speakers are tiny and lose efficiency in the bass. At 165 Hz the sound comes out weak compared with the mids, and it is normal to hear more harmonics than the fundamental. The cone still moves, but do not expect full bass.
Apple does not say. Its support page describes a series of tones when you turn Water Lock off and gives no frequency, so we cannot say 165 Hz is the official value. Treat it as the apps' convention.
At a low or moderate volume and for up to two minutes the risk is small, but a loud continuous tone heats the voice coil of any speaker. That is why the volume cap is -6 dBFS and the timer runs from 15 to 120 seconds. If you notice hiss or distortion, stop.
