checkbox symbol and ballot box to copy
Unicode has three ready-made checkboxes: empty (☐), checked (☑) and crossed (☒), in three consecutive code points. You can build a to-do list in any text field with no Markdown and no emoji. The search below opens already filtered by "ballot".
For what is still to do.
For what is done; it has an emoji form on some platforms.
For canceled or declined.
Each box is a 3-byte character in UTF-8.
Click the symbol. It is copied to the clipboard and also added to the composition box. Then paste it with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac) into any field. On a phone, tap and hold the field and choose Paste.
No. They are ordinary characters. Only apps with their own checklist (GitHub Markdown, Notion, Google Docs) switch the state on click; elsewhere, delete it and paste the other symbol.
Because ☑ has an emoji version and some platforms prefer it. Turn on "force text style" when copying to append U+FE0E, which asks for the monochrome form.
To display, yes, with ☐ or ☑. To collect an answer, use <input type="checkbox">: the character submits no value and is not keyboard focusable.
