The keyboard #
- Input
- #
- Expected output
- U+0023, UTF-8 23, #, Alt+35
This is what the networks recognize as the start of a hashtag.
hashtag symbol, number sign and pound sign
The # is one of the oldest keyboard characters, with many names: "cerquilha" and "jogo da velha" in Brazil, "pound sign" in the United States, "hash" in the United Kingdom, "cardinal" in Portugal. To Unicode it has just one official name, NUMBER SIGN. Below are the # and its visual relatives, # and ♯, which fool whoever copies the wrong symbol.
This is what the networks recognize as the start of a hashtag.
Do not use it in hashtags on Western networks.
Looks like a #, but is a different character.
No spaces; capital letters help readability.
Three code points, 7 bytes.
Click the symbol. It is copied to the clipboard and also added to the composition box. Then paste it with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac) into any field. On a phone, tap and hold the field and choose Paste.
Press Shift+3 on ABNT2 and US keyboards. On Windows Alt+35 also works. On a phone, open the numbers and symbols layer (123 on iPhone, ?123 on Android).
Check that the character is # (U+0023) and not # or ♯, and that there is no space, hyphen or period inside it. A hashtag ends at the first character that is not a letter, digit or underscore.
Unicode calls # NUMBER SIGN because in the United States it means "number" (#5). In Brazil, the number sign is Nº or №, another character (U+2116), and # is "cerquilha".
